Where to eat

Here you can find all places of Setomaa where you can eat and drink. When travelling in Setomaa, be sure to taste the local food. The Seto food is mostly simple and homey, yet very tasty. It sure tastes somewhat different than Estonian food.

In summertime, try the cold soup made of seasonal vegetables and dairy (suulliim). In wintertime, different casseroles cooked in oven taste the best. A Seto specialty is the smelt soup (tindiruug), which is a thick hearty soup that includes both dried smelt and smoked ham.

It’s recommended to taste food containing mushrooms, such as the soup made of dried mushrooms (tatiruug). And don’t forget sõir, the fresh pressed curd cheese, which has become the signature food of Setomaa.
